Developer Analog Obsession has released MidBoss, a free mid-frequency saturator for macOS and Windows.
Very few freeware announcements are celebrated with the same level of excitement and expectation as news of another Analog Obsession release, and with good reason.
Analog Obsession has a proven track record of creating free plugins that overdeliver with a unique blend of vintage authenticity and the developer’s personality.
The latest addition to the Analog Obsession collection is MidBoss, a saturator and sweetener that targets midrange frequencies.
The new plugin is free in AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.11 or higher) and Windows (10-11).
Mac versions require a graphics card that supports Apple’s Metal API (I think some older third-party cards, like Nvidia or AMD, may have issues, but I’m not sure how far back you have to go before support was standard).
Windows versions require a graphics card that supports OpenGL.
MidBoss features six types of saturation, each offering a distinct character: Edgy, Crunchy, Breaky, Silky, Bassy, and Dusty.
Besides selecting one of six types, there are only a few controls to adjust: Drive, Mix, and Output.
The Drive knob shapes and saturates the signal according to the type you select, and the variation is very apparent.
The Mix knob blends the dry/wet signals, the Output provides +/- 15dB clean output, and you have a bypass switch.
The interface, which looks classic hardware, in typical Analog Obsession style, is resizable from 50% to 200%.
The Silky setting works great on typical jingly-jangly guitar parts, particularly acoustic guitar, and the Crunch setting adds a lovely character to electric guitar lines or solos.
It’s worth trying each setting on less expected sources too, for some, less standard, but quirky and cool effects. Although the plugin generally aims at mid-frequency content, it will also shape high/low-end response.
We spend so much more time talking about the perfect low-end or highs, it’s easy to underrepresent the importance of the mids. Not least of all because it’s where the fundamental frequencies of many instruments reside.
MidBoss is a great way to add instant presence and character. It’s also a nice way to bring specific elements out in your mix if it’s a bit muddy, or even with masking issues when you want to draw out energy from a particular part rather than cut elsewhere.
