Zebralette 3 is here: The latest version of u-he’s freeware classic is official

We’ve had quite a few Zebralette updates in recent months, as the highly anticipated third edition neared the end of a lengthy beta phase – and now, Zebralette 3 is out!

After immeasurable hard work and dedication from Urs Heckman and his team at u-he, we can finally say the wait is over, and Zebralette 3 is official.

Zebralette is available in 64-bit AU, VST3, AAX, and CLAP formats for macOS (10.10 or later), Windows ( 7 or later), and Linux (glibc version 2.28 or later).

Zebralette is, of course, the little brother of the more powerful Zebra flagship synth. As the little brother, Zebralette is limited to a single oscillator, although the word limited loses all meaning when you start to play with this synth.

In addition to a fully-featured spectral oscillator, you have a classic envelope generator, an MSEG envelope generator, a very creative modulation matrix, two LFOs, built-in effects, and more.

Two of the standout features are the Oscillator Editor and the MSEG Editor.

The Oscillator Editor becomes even more flexible than expected with advanced spline-based editing, allowing smoother, curved transitions than traditional point editing.

If you’re creating any slow-burning sounds that morph and evolve into expansive cinematic textures, the splice-based editing is exceptional.

The MSEG envelope generator lets you create and morph between up to seven MSEGs.

The same advanced spline-based editing applies to the MSEG Editor, so you can go really deep with those sci-fi-esque evolving soundscapes.

As you’d expect, Zebralette 3 has a bunch of excellent presets, covering poly synth sounds, pads, percussive sounds, and more.

There are a few organ-like presets I really enjoyed, but what I love most about them is how nuanced many of them are. Even some of the simplest sounds have some underlying element of movement or harmony that takes them beyond run-of-the-mill presets.

Zebralette has long been one of the best free synths available, and a huge thank you goes to everyone at u-he for making it even better.
