Fantamidi is a step sequencer, synth, and MIDI generator toolkit meant to help producers try different musical ideas effectively.
It features a MIDI randomiser that is aware of the musical scale and key you’re in. Key and scale can also be changed on the fly.
Additionally, Fantamidi boasts a melody and bass generation section, drag-and-drop MIDI export, a simple synth engine, and powerful controls to reshape chord structures and arpeggios in real-time.
Fantamidi works with macOS and Windows and comes in VST3 and AU formats.
The plugin comes as a free or paid version, wherein the paid version supports manual note editing, more steps, control functionality, and pattern snapshots.
Thus, the free version is slightly limited, but it might still be a nice tool if you like this kind of workflow.
The plugin interface consists of a piano roll, controls for the synth engine, and an elaborate panel to the right, enabling you to get into the nitty-gritty details of key, scale, randomisation, arpeggiation, and modulation.
The Shuffle Modulation system is pretty cool, attempting to make the often daunting task of modulation easily accessible by shifting your MIDI structure to the appropriate key and scale without much effort.
There’s always a case for learning theory, but what counts at the end of the day is how it sounds. Fantamidi helps you try different ideas quickly and rely on your ears. A wealth of key changes is now available with the press of a single button.
Setting it up is easy: Place Fantamidi on a miditrack, set the key and scale your track is in, hit “new” or “add” and then route the MIDI to a virtual instrument of your choice.
The developer recommends auditioning the same MIDI output with different instruments to see if you can spark some inspiration.
Please note that Fantamidi is under active development, so the developer welcomes bug and crash reports.
