Eli & Flo has released HiPan, a free dual-band panning utility plugin for macOS and Windows.
HiPan is a simple tool that lets you pan high and low frequencies independently instead of moving the entire signal left or right.
I like having a folder with simple utilities like this when mixing. It is not that you cannot recreate the same basic idea with other plugins in your DAW, but it is definitely quicker to put HiPan on a channel than to set up multiband routing just to pan one part of the spectrum differently.
It’s definitely not a must-have. But it’s handy if you want to keep the low end where it belongs and move the upper frequencies around.
The most obvious use case is bass-heavy material. If you have an 808, bass guitar, synth bass, or drum loop where the low end should stay centered, HiPan lets you keep that part stable while widening or shifting the higher frequencies.
It can also help with synths and leads that need a wider or more interesting stereo position without pulling the entire sound away from the center.
One cool sound design use I can see here is automating the high-frequency pan for a bit of movement while leaving the low end alone. This can work very well for adding some interest to the top end while the weight stays locked in place.
HiPan includes independent high and low frequency panning, an adjustable crossover frequency, Stereo Spread, Low Mono mode, and solo monitoring. It’s also super lightweight on the CPU, at least on my M1 MacBook Air.
Low Mono mode is handy if you want extra reassurance that the bottom end remains focused. And there’s also the solo monitoring to quickly check what each band is doing before moving anything.
The itch.io page marks the project as AI-assisted for code, and I appreciate that the developers disclosed this clearly on the product page. The plugin is listed as free forever.
HiPan is available as a VST3 plugin for Windows. The macOS version includes VST3 and AU formats. Windows users need to copy the VST3 file to the standard VST3 folder, while macOS users can run the included installer package.
