Hell Yes Loop Lab has released HYLL Pressure, a free/pay-what-you-want soft clipper plugin for macOS and Windows.
Does the world really need another soft clipper? Probably not. Definitely not, even.
Do I need this soft clipper? I don’t.
But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look because, the way I see it, with plugins, even very simple ones, everyone has preferences.
Some people choose a plugin because of the sound, some because of the workflow, and sometimes even because the interface puts them in the right mood to make something.
HYLL Pressure definitely has a unique visual style, and I can see that being part of the appeal for some users.
The other thing it has going for it is the way the controls are labeled. Instead of sticking to the usual technical terms, HYLL Pressure uses more descriptive names that make the process feel a little less clinical.
Pressure is basically the input gain, Density is the soft-to-hard clipping control, and Ceiling sets the clipping ceiling/threshold. You also get Level for output matching and Blend for parallel processing.
I sometimes think it is better to learn the actual language of audio, because input gain, knee, threshold, and output level are terms you will keep seeing everywhere.
On the other hand, if someone doesn’t care about the technical side and just wants to work quickly, labels like Pressure and Density might help them get useful results faster, especially in the beginning.
As a clipper, HYLL Pressure seems to cover what you would expect. It can round sharp transients, add density to drums, bass, vocals, and more, and transition from gentle saturation to heavier clipping.
The Blend control is handy for parallel processing, and the plugin also includes factory presets for starting points like Gentle Kiss, Master Glue, Warm Density, Drum Crush, Tape Push, and 808 Wallbreaker. Again, these are all pretty basic clipper settings, but having them named like this can be very helpful in the beginning.
HYLL Pressure also includes preset storage and A/B testing, which I do appreciate. These little workflow extras make it easier to compare settings properly instead of just assuming the louder option is better.
If you already have a favorite clipper, HYLL Pressure probably won’t replace it. But if you don’t have one yet, or if the descriptive controls sound more inviting than a typical clipper interface, it is worth downloading.
HYLL Pressure is available as a macOS AU and Windows VST3 plugin. There is no installer, so you copy the plugin file to the appropriate plugin folder and rescan in your DAW if needed.
