Cinematic Wineglasses from developer West Highland Sound is a free wine glass library for Kontakt.
The library requires the full version of Kontakt 6.8 or later and isn’t compatible with the free Kontakt Player.
Composers often look to the acoustic resonance of natural or manufactured materials to create sounds that feel more alive.
Cinematic sound design often harnesses wooden, metallic, and glass resonance, each for its distinct tonal and atmospheric qualities.
Cinematic Wineglasses brings us the uniquely haunting sound of wine glasses vibrating at their natural frequency.
If we want evidence of how impactful this sound is in media composition, we can look to composer Cliff Martinez, who has used wine glasses throughout his career, most notably for Steven Soderbergh’s 1989 cult classic Sex, Lies, and Videotape.
Cinematic Wineglasses includes 52 instruments: one rubbed instrument, one struck instrument, and 50 patches from bowed performances.
The struck instrument has six velocity layers with eight round robins per layer.
The 50 bowed patches aren’t variations of a single performance; they come from 50 individual performances covering various articulations.
If you’re going to make a wine glass library, you might as well do it properly, and I like that West Highland Sound has gone the extra mile to highlight each note’s uniqueness.
You can shape the sound, adding movement and texture via the Advanced page. The Advanced page includes two reverbs (Space and Tail), a tempo-locked delay with a ping-pong switch, an amp envelope, and a distortion stage.
Each reverb serves a different purpose: Space positions the glass in the room, and Tail is a send that leaves the dry glass as is, no matter how long the tail.
While the Advanced page offers great sound design options, the sound’s natural movement is what makes it so cinematic.
You hear it best with the bowed patches, especially in how multiple notes evolve independently in a pad formation.
The shorter pads are also lovely.
There’s a lot more to explore than you might expect. The preset names describe emotions and scenarios more than sound, which fits well in a cinematic context.
Not everyone has the full version of Kontakt, but you don’t need to miss out on cinematic sounds.
