From developer M Media Audio comes Volume Dealer, a free mastering limiter with a full BS.1770 LUFS metering suite.
Earlier this month, we covered Violet Crown from M Media Audio, a free channel strip plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Violet Crown is the first freebie from M Media Audio, and now we have the second, Volume Dealer.
Volume Dealer is a true-peak mastering limiter with a full LUFS metering suite. The plugin is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
I should note that Violet Crown received mixed feedback in the comments, and some readers had trouble accessing the website for a time.
I haven’t had any issues with the website this time around.
One of the issues with the Violet Crown GUI is that the small text didn’t make the parameters as instantly identifiable as you’d like. The interface has around 20 knobs, a couple of switches, and two large VU meters, and might just need a bit of a reshuffle to allow clearer labelling.
Again, I don’t have the same issue this time around; the Volume Dealer GUI is far less busy, although it’s built around the same large VU meters.
Volume Dealer tackles a persistent problem for bedroom producers: hitting the correct loudness target.
Whether looking for consistency across an EP or album, or trying to match the various standards for an ever-growing list of streaming platforms, it can be a bit of a nightmare.
The plugin allows you to select your target LUFS and set that level with a single click, by applying the necessary corrective gain.
Although the workflow is short from target to result, Volume Dealer offers a comprehensive display of Integrated LUFS, Short-Term LUFS, Momentary LUFS, Gain Applied, Gain Reduction, and Output Peak.
The true-peak limiter, in addition to the brickwall ceiling at -0.01 dBFS, offers an adjustable soft knee (Edge Rounding), Input Trim (-/+12 dB), and true bypass.
A High Quality mode with 2X oversampling enables you to catch any inter-sample peaks that might otherwise be missed before final export.
When it comes to measuring overall loudness, a few usual suspects come to mind, like the Youlean Loudness Meter 2 (free version available) and Nugen Audio’s VisLM.
