Studio Kozak releases FALA, a FREE BBD chorus plugin

Studio Kozak has released FALA, a free vintage-inspired BBD chorus plugin for macOS and Windows.

This is another guitar stompbox-style plugin we have covered this week. The last one was GRIM3 Overdrive from Aurora DSP, while FALA is a chorus plugin shaped like a simple guitar pedal.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I love collecting these little stompbox-style plugins. You can argue that they are too simple and that you don’t need something like FALA if you already have a more advanced chorus, and that’s probably true.

But I like combining little plugins like this one to build custom pedalboard-style multi-effects for processing synths. A bit of chorus here, a little distortion there, maybe some delay after that, and suddenly the synth patch gets more character.

It’s just a fun workflow for me, probably something I picked up in the early days when most free effects were simple, and I never let go.

FALA is designed around a vintage BBD chorus character with analog-style drift. You also get a bit of saturation and stereo movement. Studio Kozak says it is not a recreation of any specific pedal, but the goal is clearly to capture the imperfect movement of old analog chorus circuits.

The plugin has two modulation ranges. Shallow is for more subtle widening, while Deep gives you a more obvious chorus effect.

The controls are simple. Rate sets the modulation speed, Mix blends the dry and processed signals, Output lets you adjust the level, and Power bypasses the effect.

One fun detail is that the interface labels are in Polish. The main controls are Szybkość, Głębia, Mieszanie, Wyjście, and Zasilanie, but just tweak them and listen, and you’ll figure out which one does what even if you don’t speak Polish.

FALA is available as a free download from GitHub. The plugin runs on Windows 10 or later in VST3 format and macOS 11 Big Sur or later in VST3 and AU formats.

The macOS build supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and depending on your security settings, you may need to authorize the plugin manually the first time it loads.
