Developer Angelic Vibes has released Spread, a free stereo widening plugin for macOS and Windows.
Spread is the second installment in the developer’s AV Essentials FX series (which I think also includes the free Pitchshifter that we recently featured). It is designed for vocals, samples, melodies, bass, drums, synths, and just about anything that needs more width.
I like minimal interfaces and clean design, but this one almost feels a bit too minimal at first because there are no labels explaining what the knobs do. Once you figure out the layout, though, the workflow is simple and fast.
You get three mode buttons and three main knobs, with only one widening type active at a time.
Type 1, Spread, is the signature clean stereo widening mode with adjustable delay time. Type 2, Micro, combines tight stereo spread with subtle pitch shifting, while Type 3, Cloud, uses three stacked, detuned voices with gentle stereo widening.
Each mode adds a little more stereo depth with a slightly different vibe, and I like this approach because you can add width bit by bit without overdoing it. It’s a nice way to make sounds wider without pushing things so far that you compromise mono mix performance or make them sound artificially wide.
Stereo widening is always best used sparingly. I think choosing one of these three flavors and adding just a little sounds more natural than loading a standard stereo widener and cranking it up.
The Spread knob controls how wide the effect feels, and Mix blends the dry and processed signals. The third control changes with the selected mode, providing Time, Detune, or Drift for delay time, subtle pitch movement, or soft drifting motion.
All three knobs are automatable in your DAW, and the bottom-right handle lets you resize the interface.
To get this one for free, you need to create an Angelic Vibes user account. The download is 60 MB for both macOS and Windows, and you can install it by running the installer and rescanning your plugins in your DAW.
Spread v1.0.1 is available in VST3 format for macOS and Windows, plus AU for macOS. It is compatible with all major DAWs except Pro Tools.
