Rust Romance has released BigBlockPre LE, a free discrete console preamp plugin for macOS and Windows.
BigBlockPre LE is inspired by the classic API 312-style signal path, combining an input transformer, a 2520-style discrete op-amp gain stage, and an output transformer.
It does not emulate one particular hardware unit. Instead, this is a custom channel assembled from familiar API-style components.
I like the minimal interface. It has a very nice layout, everything is where it should be, and there are no unnecessary details. The clean look is very good, in my opinion, and the controls are easy to understand.
The free LE edition has one fixed signal chain. Audio passes through a passive PAD, an AP2622-style input transformer, a 2520-style discrete op-amp, an AP2503-style output transformer, and passive output attenuation.
This is a circuit-level processor, and its individual stages use Wave Digital Filter models, so increasing GAIN changes how the transformers and amplifier interact.
At subtle settings, BigBlockPre LE adds a bit of weight, density, and presence. But if you push the GAIN harder and lower the OUTPUT, you can bring out more transformer color, compression, harmonics, or even obvious distortion.
The PAD reduces the level entering the circuit, while GAIN controls how hard the amplifier and remaining stages are driven. OUTPUT brings the final level back down, and LINK moves GAIN and OUTPUT in opposite directions.
You can choose between High Quality and FAST processing. High Quality uses the reference WDF engine throughout the signal path, while the default FAST mode is a lighter alternative designed for lower CPU usage across longer sessions.
BigBlockPre LE could work on drums, bass, vocals, synths, samplers, virtual instruments, room microphones, and buses.
I think it is especially worth checking out if you are relatively new to this type of processor, do not already have plugins that cover this ground, or simply enjoy collecting analog emulations and finding out how close plugins can get.
I completed the free checkout to get the free version, and it’s fairly simple. You check out with your email and password, and you get a serial number. This serial number needs to be entered the first time you run the plugin, so it’s a bit more complicated than expected for a free plugin, but still not crazy.
The paid BigBlockPre Pro expands the same concept by making the input transformer, discrete op-amp, and output transformer selectable. Its five op-amp choices include 2520, 1731, 990, AM10, and OA10-style models, offering more ways to change the gain behavior, headroom, saturation, and transient response.
BigBlockPre LE supports 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 in VST3 format. The Universal Binary macOS version supports Intel Macs from macOS 10.13 and Apple Silicon from macOS 11 in VST3 and AU formats. An internet connection is required for initial activation.
