HOFA-Plugins has released SYSTEM ThirdPartyPluginLoader, allowing the free version of HOFA SYSTEM to host one third-party plugin at a time.
HOFA SYSTEM is a modular environment for custom effect chains, routing, and modulation. We previously covered its free DigiDestroy bitcrusher, which works inside SYSTEM or separately.
The new loader supports VST2, VST3, and AU plugins, and the freeware edition includes all paid-edition routing features.
The only major limitation is that the free edition can load just one external plugin per SYSTEM instance. You do not need the paid HOFA SYSTEM bundle or any additional modules to use it.
SYSTEM’s multiband module lets the hosted effect process selected frequency ranges, potentially turning your favorite compressor (or any other type of plugin) into a multiband processor.
You also get Mid/Side and Left/Right processing, dry/wet and parallel routing, plus feedback loops around the hosted plugin.
SYSTEM can do other cool stuff, too, like adding oversampling to reduce aliasing from saturation, distortion, and clipping, although some plugins cannot run at very high sample rates.
The loader provides delay compensation and sidechain passthrough, while external parameters support DAW automation and SYSTEM’s free-running or tempo-synced modulators.
I also like that custom setups can be saved as presets with their routing, modulation, and third-party plugin settings. In other words, you can use the free loader to create reusable versions of individual plugins with added multiband processing, Mid/Side operation, oversampling, or modulation already configured.
There is also a handy format-wrapping element. HOFA SYSTEM runs in VST3, AU, and AAX formats, which means it can host VST plugins in Logic, AU plugins in Cubase, and VST or AU plugins in Pro Tools. I haven’t tested this feature, so please let me know how it goes if you try it.
The full ThirdPartyPluginLoader removes the one-plugin restriction and allows unlimited third-party plugins in more complex chains, parallel setups, and multiband racks. It is available for an introductory price of €49, down from €60.
But it’s not all great. You need to download the HOFA-Plugins Manager, which is a somewhat annoying extra step. The manager part went smoothly for me; just make sure to deselect everything else, select the free HOFA SYSTEM plugin, and it installs the freeware suite, including this loader (145 MB total on my Mac).
After installation, you must manually scan your VST plugins inside HOFA SYSTEM to use third-party hosting. The scan was very slow for me, especially when it reached WaveShell, where it appeared to get stuck. The scan window could not be minimized, either.
So, the downside is that installing this and getting it running took about 20 minutes total, but it will depend on the number of plugins you have on your machine. I tried to force it to scan a smaller custom plugin folder I made just for it, but that didn’t work, either.
HOFA SYSTEM is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 or later.
