Studio Kozak has released SK Rust, a free lo-fi coloration plugin for macOS and Windows.
The developer describes it as “the sound of something forgotten in a damp Eastern European cellar,” which is honestly a pretty good summary, especially regarding the interface (speaking from experience).
I really like the GUI because it reminds me of the original Vladg/Sound Molot compressor by Vladislav Goncharov. I used Molot a lot back in the day, and SK Rust brings back memories with this similar old-school Soviet gear vibe.
As for the sound, SK Rust dirties a clean signal with saturation, tonal shaping, pitch instability, noise, and haze. There are no menus, which I always appreciate. You get seven main controls, linked gain compensation, output meters, and a power switch.
Input determines how hard you drive the coloration stage, while Grit moves from subtle warmth toward overdrive and distortion. Enabling Link lowers the output as you raise the input, so it’s easier to judge the extra dirt without a large jump in loudness.
Warp is my favorite control. It adds pitch wobble and drift, and it’s fun to use on sounds that benefit from a bit of instability, like pads and guitars (depending on the style, of course). Dust adds noise and hiss, but the noise floor remains silent when the control is at zero.
Color shifts the processed signal from dark and muffled to thinner and brighter. Veil then softens and hazes the result, adding a bit of murkiness without becoming an obvious echo or reverb effect.
Studio Kozak suggests using SK Rust on sustained material such as pads, drones, strings, vocals, and such, basically any signal where the movement has time to breathe. The developer says it is less suited to drums and full mixes, although there is nothing stopping you from trying.
There are no presets, but with these few controls, I don’t think it needs them. You simply turn the knobs until you like the amount of lo-fi it adds.
Speaking of which, this is definitely a fun lo-fi effect, but it isn’t the best or most customizable option I’ve tried. I won’t be keeping it because I’m already covered by other plugins (including our own free BPB Dirty VHS), although SK Rust is still cool if you want to add some grit and pitch wobble without spending much time on setup.
The free download is available as VST3 for Windows 10 or later and as VST3 and AU for macOS 11 or later, with native support for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
