RC MIX has released RC SNARE, a $49 channel strip designed specifically for mixing recorded acoustic snare drums.
Instead of replacing the drummer’s performance with samples, RC SNARE processes the original recording using six controls that cover transient shaping, tonal cleanup, resonance, compression, and harmonic color.
ATTACK is a transient shaper focused on the initial stick hit. You can turn it down for a softer thud, or turn it up to help the snare cut through a dense arrangement.
BODY uses RC MIX’s AUTO technology to locate the drum’s fundamental frequency before letting you adjust its weight.
CRACK applies a similar adaptive approach to the important high-mid region, with additional harmonics appearing as you boost it.
RING analyzes the snare’s resonant overtones across three bands. Its processing is focused on the decay rather than the initial attack, so you can reduce the familiar snare “boing” without removing the character of the stick hit. Turning it in the opposite direction emphasizes the drum’s natural resonance.
PUNCH is a one-knob parallel compressor that adjusts threshold, ratio, gain reduction, and harmonic distortion together while retaining some dry signal.
AIR handles the upper frequencies and snare-strainer detail through a fixed high-frequency shelf. Boosting it also introduces tube and transistor harmonics, while negative settings can calm an overly bright or harsh recording.
AUTO processing is applied to BODY, CRACK, and RING, adapting those sections to the recorded drum rather than using fixed frequency points. This is the main difference between RC SNARE and a conventional channel strip, and it keeps the interface to six large controls plus output level.
RC SNARE introduces only six samples of latency, and RC MIX recommends placing it near the beginning of the signal chain.
By the way, RC MIX was founded by drummer and audio-industry veteran Rob Clark, whose background includes recording in Nashville studios and working at Apogee Electronics.
The second release is RC RING, a free plugin containing the resonance-control section from RC SNARE. It automatically identifies ringing overtones and gives you one main control for reducing or enhancing them while leaving the attack intact.
RC RING comes with a perpetual license and no feature or time restrictions. You must create a free RC MIX account with your name, email address, and password to download it, although the separate marketing-email checkbox is optional. After installation, click the UNLICENSED button inside either plugin to register its license.
As for RC SNARE, the $49 purchase is a perpetual license with updates and activation on up to two computers.
Both plugins support macOS 12 or newer in AU, VST3, and AAX formats, with native Intel and Apple Silicon compatibility. Windows 11 users get VST3 and AAX versions.
