t4 Digital Studio has released AlterVerb 53, a free algorithmic reverb plugin for Windows.
The developer designed AlterVerb 53 for busy and bright material that needs more space without losing definition. Drums, percussion, keyboards, and vocals are suggested starting points, though it should work on anything that benefits from highly customizable reverb.
The plugin gives you separate control over the early reflections and reverb tail, so you can shape the first impression of the room independent of the decay that follows.
The main controls include Pre Delay, Decay Time, Room Size, Density, Diffusion, high- and low-frequency damping, modulation, and stereo Width. There are also independent Early and Tail levels, shelving EQ, Dry/Wet and Output controls, input/output meters, and a 100% wet option for send effects.
One of the additions I found most interesting is Peak Smooth. It is designed to tame sharp high-frequency peaks inside the reverb signal without simply dulling the whole tail. That little trick is definitely handy on cymbals, percussion, and other bright sources where reverb can quickly become harsh or cloudy.
I also asked the developer about the use of AI when developing the plugin, and he said that the development was AI-assisted, but he did not describe it as vibe-coded.
Thomas is a developer and musician who works in C++ and Python in Visual Studio 2022. He says AI was used as a development assistant, while the DSP concept, architecture, parameter behavior, listening tests, tuning, and final implementation decisions were developed and verified by him through many iterations.
As I wrote in our DuskVerb coverage, the term vibe coding now covers everything from prompting an entire plugin into existence to experienced developers using AI to speed up parts of a conventional workflow, and there’s quite a bit of difference between those two.
AlterVerb 53 has a resizable interface and supports loading and saving presets. The current product image identifies version 0.4.0.
