Hakuna Audio has released Hakunizer, a free one-knob enhancer plugin for macOS and Windows.
The workflow immediately reminded me of Image-Line’s old Soundgoodizer. Just like in FL Studio’s old multiband sound enhancer, you choose one of four programs labeled A, B, C, and D, then turn a single large knob until the result sounds good.
To be clear, though, Soundgoodizer applies four presets from Image-Line’s Maximus multiband processor, but Hakunizer is its own effect with four different processing characters.
All four modes make the source louder and denser, but they emphasize different parts of the signal. Program A boosts the lows and highs above the midrange and adds the most saturation, so it is the most colorful option.
Program B pushes the midrange forward while barely changing the low end. Program C lifts the spectrum evenly and applies the strongest compression without substantially changing the tonal balance.
Program D is the cleanest option, and I liked it the most. It uses full-band dynamics processing to raise the level and reduce dynamic variation without intentionally changing the tone, stereo image, or adding color.
The Amount knob determines how much processing you hear. You can click it to bypass the plugin, hold Shift for fine adjustments, or double-click to return to 50%. Both the Amount and Program selection can be automated, and the interface scales from 25% to 200%.
As with Soundgoodizer, the danger is that louder can easily seem better. It’s definitely recommended to compare with bypass and stop just before the processing becomes obvious. I would also choose the program while listening to the complete mix rather than in solo.
To download Hakunizer, you must create a free Hakuna Audio account and claim a license key. The plugin passes silence until activated, and the first activation requires an internet connection. One license covers three computers and does not expire.
The Windows installer may trigger a Microsoft SmartScreen warning because it is not yet recognized. Hakunizer supports 64-bit CLAP and VST3 on Windows 10/11, while the macOS 10.13+ version includes CLAP, VST3, and AU for Intel and Apple Silicon.
