Density mkIII Released! (Now With Stateful Saturation)

Variety Of Sound has released Density mkIII, a long-awaited update to this fantastic freeware bus compressor in VST plugin format for Windows.

The mkIII version of this compressor introduces quite a lot and deep optimizations of the compressor engine especially but not limited for its use in audio mastering situations. The transient response is spot on now over the entire spectrum and it creates sonic depth and dimension: It renders audio like a three-dimensional image.

Density mkIII is available for free download via Variety Of Sound. According to Bootsie, the Density engine was improved to better cope with modern mastering needs. Most of these improvements are based on the implementation of the newly developed Stateful Saturation algorithm.

Judging by the screenshot, it seems that the color setting is optional and can be added to taste (notice the color knob between the meters). This means that Density mkIII can still remain transparent, if need be.

However, quite a lot of improvements and tweaks have been implemented under the hood. According to the introduction page on Variety Of Sound’s blog, the timing controls have been tweaked, the sidechain filter was optimized, the COMP mode now features soft-knee characteristics, etc. The complete list of improvements can be found in the Density mkIII announcement article.
