Trance and techno DJ/producer Marco Scherer has announced the release of It’s Drums, a free collection of eight drum kits designed for use in electronic music with support for NI Maschine, NI Battery and Ableton Live.
Apart from supporting the three aforementioned platforms, the pack also includes the individual 24-bit WAV samples which can be used in pretty much any sampler instrument out there. I’ve recently reviewed an interesting free drum sampler called Quad Zamp which is actually the perfect free tool to use for playing drum samples such as these (except for the fact that it’s limited to 32-bit Windows machines).
Obviously, this way you won’t get the same level of convenience as when loading a ready-made drum kit in Maschine or Ableton. However, it shouldn’t really take too long to create an alternative set of patches in your sampler instrument of choice. By the way, it might be a bit hard to find the WAV files inside the pack at first, because the folders are named after the software instruments that the sample collection was designed for.
With that in mind, my suggestion is to open the “Maschine and Battery Kits” folder inside the download pack and grab the WAV files from there. Inside this folder, the samples are organized into eighteen individual drum kits which are easy to browse than the complete mess in the Ableton Live folder.
When it comes to the actual content, all of the usual drum sample suspects are included in It’s Drums. The pack contains a nice selection of punchy kick drums, some nice snares and toms, various percussion and cymbal samples, along with a mini set of noises and SFX samples. If you’re a techno/trance/house producer, or simply drum sample aficionado such as myself, you probably don’t want to miss this one.
The samples can be downloaded directly from the author’s website and there’s no need to sign up for a user account or anything like that. Most importantly, the included sounds are 100% royalty free!
