ABYZOR has released IZZY Synth, a free synthesizer plugin and standalone instrument for Windows.
IZZY takes a different approach from the synths we all grew up with. You know, the normal synths that put oscillator, filter, envelope, and modulation controls in front of you.
In this one, you choose between Bass, Stab, Lead, and Pluck sound types, then click Generate to create a new patch. For me, that takes away most the fun out of using a synth, but times are changing, whether we like it or not.
The generated sounds are stored across eight patch slots, so you can quickly compare several ideas without losing the previous one. Once something works, nine macro controls let you adjust practical qualities such as length, punch, space, and output level.
Generate fills the next available slot automatically, turning the row into a quick audition history. That makes experimentation fast, although it also means IZZY is a lot narrower than a conventional synthesizer with detailed oscillator and modulation controls.
There is also an on-screen MIDI keyboard and a real-time waveform display, but the synth keeps the underlying synthesis out of the way.
I love programming synths, and I can get lost for hours exploring parameters and coming up with new sounds. I highly recommend that every producer learn at least the basics because understanding oscillators, filters, envelopes, and modulation makes almost every synthesizer easier to use.
For me, skipping that process takes away much of the fun. However, not everyone enjoys sound design, and sometimes you simply want a suitable bass, pluck, lead, or stab without interrupting the track. If you would rather skip synth programming for good, IZZY is an alternative that removes most technical decisions.
You can also pair it with ABYZOR Genesis, the developer’s free MIDI generator that we featured earlier this year. Genesis generates melodies, basslines, chords, and arpeggios, while IZZY supplies the sound.
IZZY Synth v0.1.0 includes 64-bit VST3 and standalone versions for Windows 10 or newer. A macOS edition is currently in development.
