Unfiltered Audio’s commercial low-pass filter and multi-mode distortion effect called Indent ($49 regular price) will be available as a free download via Plugin Alliance until August 15th.

Indent is a powerful distortion/filter effect featuring a great sounding LP filter and multiple distortion flavors. According to the developer, it was designed for use on guitars, basslines, synthesizers and drum tracks, working equally well as a subtle saturation device and a heavy distortion tool. The plugin was released today and is available for free download for a limited time only. The free download offer expires on August 15th.

I tested Indent in MuLab 6 (64-bit) and was thoroughly impressed by the plugin’s feature set, user interface, sound and performance. It is a fantastic mixing and sound design tool, one that is well worth the $49 asking price, let alone the current $0 deal. You do not want to miss this one!

There are four distortion types to choose from, namely soft clipping, hard clipping, wavefold and overfold. These can be applied individually at the input and the output stage, meaning that you can, for example, apply soft clipping on the input and wavefold distortion on the output. The plugin also features a nice sounding filter module and a mix knob which makes it a powerful parallel processing tool. The variety of distortion flavors and tones which can be achieved with Indent is almost unlimited and I can easily see it becoming my go-to distortion effect in the future. It can sound like a warm tape machine or a brutal metal distortion pedal and anything in between.

Things get even better once you start using Indent’s modulation features. It is possible to run up to six modulation sources at the same time, each capable of modulating multiple destinations. There are three LFO shapes to choose from (sine, saw/triangle, square), along with an input follower, a macro control (basically a way to map multiple parameters to a single knob on your MIDI controller) and a S+H noise generator. It is also possible to use one modulation source to modulate another one’s parameters, as well as its own, which is a great way to add complex movement to the processed audio signal. The patching is done via drag and drop, something that we normally see in modular synthesizer plugins.

The user interface design is minimal and very well thought out. It is resizable (you can enlarge it up to 200% from the menu) and comes with two different skins (black and white). The included live waveform view is rather handy for preventing clipping on the output.

The CPU hit is very low. It never exceeded 3% during my test on an i7 based laptop. The performance was also quite stable, without any noticeable CPU spikes and similar issues. Indent is available as a VST/VST3/AU/AAX plugin for PC and Mac based digital audio workstations.
