AudioKit Pro has released FM Player, a free sample-based iOS app featuring the classic FM sounds of the Yamaha DX7, DX7II, and TX81z synthesizers.
FM Player comes with over 50 individual multi-sampled presets from Yamaha’s classic FM synthesizers. The sounds are packed into a slick, modern-looking user interface with a set of controls for further shaping the sampled sounds. Apart from a low-pass filter module with cutoff, resonance, and LFO adjustments, the app also features an auto-pan effect, distortion, a bitcrusher, a delay effect, a stereo widener, and a multi-mode reverb module.
All control paramenters can be mapped to an external MIDI controller via MIDI learn. A built-in virtual keyboard is also provided for users without any hardware gear. Coming from AudioKit Pro, it’s no surprise that FM Player supports AudioBus 3 and Inter-App Audio (IAA) integration for pairing up with other apps on your iOS device. There are no in-app purchases or ads in FM Player. The app is completely free to use and available for free download from the App Store page linked below. As for the included presets, the instrument features all the classic FM sounds like electric piano, bells, brass, and those fat 80s bass sounds.
What’s perhaps even better news is that this is an open-source project, meaning that sound designers and developers from around will be able to use the FM Player source code to create their own sample-based instruments for iOS. AudioKit Pro will release the code as a free download on December 11th this year. They’re calling it the AudioKit ROM Player and you can learn more about the project by visiting the page linked below. You’ll also find a demo video showing off some of FM Player’s presets.
