Zynaptiq Releases Free SUBSPACE Reverb VST/AU/AAX Plugin (iLok)

Zynaptiq has introduced SUBSPACE, a streamlined freeware reverb effect in VST, AU, and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac (requires iLok License Manager installation and mailing list subscription).

SUBSPACE is certainly one of the least complicated-looking plugins on the market, reverb or otherwise. The control scheme consists of four buttons for choosing the active reverb mode (A, B, C, and Z) and a mix knob. Everything else is handled under the hood, based on the reverb modules found in Zynaptiq’s previously released MORPH 2, WORMHOLE, and ADAPTIVERB plugins.

As you may have guessed, the only simple thing about SUBSPACE is its looks. The plugin’s reverb sound is undeniably complex, one you’d expect to hear coming from a much more advanced-looking tool. And that’s the thing about SUBSPACE. If you like the sound of at least one of its four included presets, the product is well worth the download (more on that below, though). If, on the other hand, you don’t particularly fancy any of the four provided preset modes, there’s nothing you could really do to tweak them to your liking.

Another complex aspect of SUBSPACE, one which comes as a bit of a surprise, is the download and installation procedure. To download the installer, you’ll need to sign up for the Zynaptiq email first. After signing up and validating your email address, the download link will be delivered to your inbox, along with your personal license activation key. The installer also includes the iLok License Manager which is used to activate SUBSPACE using the provided license key. Keep in mind that your machine will need to restart once before completing the activation procedure.

Judging by the surprisingly large download size (389 MB) for an otherwise small plugin, this is a convolution-based reverb which uses impulse responses for simulating a large space. That’s why it totally makes sense that the developers didn’t include any additional controls for tweaking the reverb tone. You can still somewhat shape its tone by loading SUBSPACE on a bus (make sure to set the plugin to 100% wet) and applying some EQ as the next insert in the FX chain.

CORRECTION: The plugin is an all-pass reverb, not a convolution reverb. Thanks to our reader Dude who spotted the error in the article.

SUBSPACE is available for free download via Zynaptiq (389 MB download size, ZIP archive containing EXE installer, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU/AAX plugin format for Windows & MacOS.

  1. Almost 400 MB for what should be a small size plug-in, and such a featureless plug-in with such few settings. On top of that iLok account and e-mail address. No thank you, I will pass. There are far better reverbs out there that are free with no iLok or e-mail, etc.

  2. Downloaded it from a hint of another site that did not state the ilok problem.
Deleted. I don’t want my PC to be infected with that…..

    • You need the iLok driver anyway, which almost any quality plugins needs these days, but if you don’t have the physical iLok, every software I’ve seen installs to two computers anyway, and once you have an iLok account you can trial some of the best software right when it’s released.
I too was a big critic until this past winter and now have some nice stuff kindly offered free by great people like Zynaptiq.
      Best of both worlds!

  3. Tested. Very interesting sounds. Despite the – lack of – controls, thats an advantage; sometimes less is more. Ilok, 400Mb is a mess? Come on…
