Virtual Drummer PHAT is a sample-based virtual drum instrument featuring a versatile acoustic drum kit which can fit a wide range of music genres. Mainly intended for use in hip-hop music, the instrument also works great for breakbeat, pop, and various styles of rock and indie music. In addition to the sampled kit, the instrument comes with 720 drum patterns spanning across 30 different styles.

Unlike most virtual acoustic drum plugins I’ve used to date, Virtual Drummer PHAT doesn’t feature an image of the sampled drum kit on the interface. Instead, it provides an intuitive and modern-looking GUI with clearly labeled controls and zero distractions. Located at the top is the drum mapping diagram which shows which MIDI note corresponds to which drum hit or drum loop. The drum mixer is positioned on the bottom of the interface, with additional tone and performance controls in the middle. These additional controls include swing, drumming speed, humanization, along with the tone preset modes which add compression and EQ to the sound on the output.

The thing I liked the most about Virtual Drummer PHAT is that you can get many different drum tones out of it without having to use additional processing. The included tone presets offer more than enough variety and the controls are easy to use in case you want to further customize the sound to your liking.
