Free MCS6 Multi-Band Compressor VST Plugin Released By J1000

J1000 has released MCS6, a freeware multiband compressor and saturator in VST plugin format for 32-bit digital audio workstations on Windows.

MCS6 is an advanced mixing and mastering tool, designed for experienced users who are looking to apply precise compression and saturation adjustments to the processed audio signal. The plugin is capable of degrading the sound quite easily when not used as intended. It is a highly capable and efficient mastering utility in the right hands, though.

The interface features a couple of resonant filters on the top (low-pass and high-pass), with the six compression/saturation stages and the gain reduction meter located below. Unlike most multiband compressors on the market, MCS6 is based on a serial structure, meaning that each processing stage will affect the signal reaching the next one. Speaking of processing, the six stages feature adjustable frequency range, compression, and saturation controls, along with the stereo width and output gain parameters.

The developer recommends going through the provided presets first in order to understand the plugin’s features and its unique signal flow. A detailed user manual in PDF format is also included in the download, explaining all of the control parameters and listing various usage tips. Most importantly, it is recommended to adjust the parameters from top to bottom of the user interface (starting with the filter section) while carefully listening to the processed signal on the output. Keep in mind that less is always more when it comes to powerful multiband processors such as the MCS6.

Unfortunately, MCS6 is only compatible with 32-bit VST plugin hosts on Windows. If you’re using a 64-bit digital audio workstation, you can still put MCS6 to good use with a third-party utility like jBridge or 32 Lives. Mac users are out of luck in this case, though. The plugin can be downloaded directly from the product page linked below, with no registration required.

MCS6 is available for free download via J1000 (2.19 MB download size, RAR archive, 32-bit VST plugin format for Windows).

  1. I always liked the J1000 plugins, but they should step their game up and look into something like JUCE , WDL-OL / IPlug-Youlean or the R programming language for plugin development. That way he can release crossplatform and 32 / 64 bit plugins more easily.

    • R programming language is used for statistics, did you mean C++?

I believe that synthedit is still the fastest way how to develop / prototype some synth and if you know c++, you are not limited by its devices / algorithms. But it is sad that there is no reliable 64bit build, true…

      • Sorry, I meant the D programming language and Dplug framework. Auburn Sounds uses it and they make nice plugins. But I think Juce and WDL-OL / Iplug are more common.

    • Thanks Ike for kind comments and thanks Tomislav for another straightforward review. Your site is excellent, keep up the great work!

J1000 is a one-man effort – myself. I’m not primarily a programmer, but a musican. All my plugins are free because they’re not meant to compete on the market. They’re just altruistic efforts to help any fellow music producers who can find some use for them. Also, I’m completely aware that it’s retro to publish 32bit Synthedit plugins in 2018, but that doesn’t bother me a bit (pun intended).

Of course, I was pondering in last few years to “step-up my game” and start using JUCE. The reason I didn’t is too complex and personal to explain here. Right now I’m much more closer to stepping down my game, stop developing software completely and spend all my time and energy on music production. So, MCS6 can possibly be the final J1000 plugin… we’ll see.

      Cheers!

      • As I said earlier, always liked your plugins. I imagine that starting to learn JUCE or Iplug would take a lot of resources and I of course fully respect your decision not to dive in deeper. Thanks for the plugins you gave to the community!

It’s a shame that Synthedit is still not able to compile 64 bit and crossplatform plugins – that would make everything so much easier.

  2. No pun intended either & your work is of course!
