MFKNE has released PUNCHDUST, a free character dynamics plugin that combines transient shaping, a reactive lo-fi texture effect, and upward compression.
Honestly, this is a slightly weird combination of effects to put in one plugin. I wouldn’t typically pair grainy lo-fi texture with a transient shaper and an upward compressor, but that’s basically why I think PUNCHDUST is interesting.
It has only four controls and no hidden settings. PUNCH brings the attack forward while leaving the sustained alone. The boosted transient passes through a soft clipper with 2x oversampling to keep the result crisp.
DUST blends digital crackle with analog-style hiss, but it isn’t simply a static noise layer. What’s cool is that the texture reacts to the input and appears as the source falls away, so it trails the sound into the decay.
SQUEEZE is a parallel upward compressor that lifts quieter sustain by up to 26 dB while deliberately excluding transients. Automatic gain compensation keeps the peaks at unity, so the signal sounds denser without simply turning up the loudest part.
Finally, TILT is a balance filter centered around 700 Hz. It works only on the added wet signal, moving left for more bass or right for more treble while leaving the dry path untouched.
I like PUNCHDUST. It’s simple, quick, and useful if you prefer tools that deliver good results with minimal setup. During my quick test, it worked very well on drums and drum breaks, both for extra impact and a slightly tape-like character.
It isn’t the most flexible transient shaper or lo-fi processor, but the unusual combination gives it a character I haven’t seen packaged quite this way before, and you may find it useful because it treats dynamics and dirt as a single effect.
PUNCHDUST uses a mono-sum detector to maintain stable stereo processing and reports its 48-sample lookahead latency to the host. It is available as a free VST3 plugin for 64-bit Windows and macOS, with native Intel and Apple Silicon support.
