iOptigan ($4.99 value) is an optical organ virtual instrument for iOS devices. The app can be downloaded completely free of charge from the App Store this weekend.

Normally priced at $4.99 in the App Store, the iOptigan app can be downloaded for free this weekend. I’m not 100% sure about when the offer will expire, so you’d better download the app ASAP while it is still on. Simply visit the App Store product page using a compatible iOS device to download and install your free copy.

iOptigan emulates the original Optigan, a vintage optical chord organ manufactured in the early ’70s. The hardware Optigan used a unique system of optical discs for sound reproduction. This concept is somewhat similar to that of the Mellotron which used magnetic tape as the medium for sound storage. Unlike the Mellotron, though, the Optigan utilized vinyl record-sized optical discs that contained musical patterns and chords. The user could press the chord buttons to select different types of accompaniment. There were different music styles to choose from, including Bossa Nova, Big Band, Pop, Latin and more.

In a similar fashion, the iOptigan app provides a large number of music styles. The base app comes with 25 of the original 40 optical discs. The additional fifteen discs can be added via an in-app purchase. Check out the demo video below to hear the iOptigan in action.

Visit the App Store to download your free copy of iOptigan. A compatible iOS device is required to run this software. And hey, don’t miss the offer to download the Minimoog Model D app for free!
