A Sound Effect has published a free video tutorial on designing robot and mech sound effects, including a mini collection of free SFX samples.

The latest edition of A Sound Effect’s tutorial series called Sound Design Workshop focuses on designing robot sound effects. The video tutorial explains various sound design techniques used to create sounds of massive robots and futuristic mechs. It’s definitely worth watching if you’re looking to improve your sound design skills, even if you’re focused on other types of SFX.

Sound design has always been a hobby of mine, along with music production and blogging. For me, designing a sound effect from scratch is a lot more relaxing than, say, trying to finish a music track. It’s one area of messing with audio where I can go totally crazy with all the VST plugins and other music production tools I have installed.

When designing sounds, I don’t really worry about going overboard with compression, limiting, EQ, etc. For me, it’s a constant process of coming up with crazy sounds, resampling them, and shaping them into something completely different. On the other hand, when making music, I always worry about doing too much work and thus making the song too complicated. More often than not, these music projects remain unfinished, whereas I come up with a bunch of new and exciting sounds in the meanwhile.

Anyway, back on topic… if you’re interested in sound design, check out this free tutorial by the guys at A Sound Effect. It’s always interesting to see how other people use their sound design tools, and you can often learn a new technique that you never knew existed. The included sample pack is also pretty useful. It consists of 22 sounds that can be used as a starting point for creation mech and robot sound effects. The sounds were created using a camera tripod, a salt shaker, a locker door, and a loading dock gate.

And if you’re looking for more free sound effects, check out the recently released 99 Sound Effects sample library on Bedroom Producers Blog’s sound design label 99Sounds. It includes a bunch of free cinematic sounds, impacts, braams, and more. All content is entirely royalty-free for use in free and paid projects.
