Frozen Plain has released Music Box Suite Free, a free music box virtual instrument in VST and AU plugin formats for compatible DAW software on PC and Mac.
Music Box Suite Free is a free multi-sampled music box sound library. The library is powered by Frozen Plain’s sample-based synthesizer called Mirage. Both the music box sample files and the host instrument are included in a single download. The installer will extract all required files automatically, so there’s no need for a manual setup.

The included multi-sampled victorian music box has an instantly recognizable sonic character – it’s the sound we’ve heard in countless horror movie trailers and mystery thriller soundtracks. That said, there are many ways to alter and reshape the source samples using the Mirage synthesizer.
Frozen Plain provided a set of twelve presets that showcase the range of sounds that can be achieved with these samples. I was surprised to find several pads among the included presets, in addition to the mallet-like sounds and plucks. These are achieved by combining various built-in effects that are available in the Mirage sampler. By adding convolution reverb and echoes to the music box samples, Frozen Plain crafted some pretty neat pad-like sounds.
This free sound library also a good opportunity to test the Mirage platform and decide if you want to purchase some of the currently available add-ons. Frozen Plain is offering three Mirage libraries at the moment: Wraith (dark textures and pads), Phoenix (synth strings and choirs), and the full version of the Music Box Suite.
You can download Music Box Suite Free completely free of charge from the Frozen Plain website. A valid email address is required to receive the download link. The instrument will work in any VST and AU plugin host on Windows and macOS.
