Somerville Sounds Releases Free The Meyer Choir Plugin

Somerville Sounds launched The Meyer Choir plugin, a free release for Mac and Windows.

The plugin is available through a ‘pay what you like’ model, and you can donate to the developer or simply download it for free.

The Meyer Choir is available for AU, VST3, and AAX.

Somerville Sounds describes The Meyer Choir as a “perfectly imperfect family choir”, and it’s definitely not your average choir plugin.

The instrument has eight samples and features the voices of Jon Meyer’s family.

The voices are Dad, Mom, and Meyers’ two young sons, Luke and Austin.

The vocal instrument is heavily processed though, so it doesn’t sound like a family singalong.

The Meyer Choir instead produces a range of eerie and otherworldly choir sounds.

Meyer runs through the available sounds and presets on a demo video hosted on the product page.

Along with more traditional sounds, the plugin has some quirky presets such as Chiff-munks, No Girls Aloud, and Polka Dots.

The Meyer Choir is the second release in Somerville Sounds’ Prototypes range, which is a series of free plugins.

Meyer gave some insight into the design of the The Meyer Choir in the demo video, saying that on the front page of the plugin “There’s nothing to do, open [it]up and make sounds.”

This is a similar design philosophy to the first Prototypes release, Rubber Bridge Plucks

Clicking on the gears icon at the top right of the plugin brings you to the settings page, which features the presets, individual volumes and mutes for each voice and a dry/wet control.

Meyer explained the characteristics of The Meyer Choir, saying, “These sounds are stretched a long way. So when you get to the root note of the sound, it sounds very normal, and then when it’s pitched a lot until it gets to the next note, it sounds kind of otherworldly, which I really like.”

When downloading the plugin, to complete the checkout you have to provide an email address and a whole bunch of personal details as if it was a physical purchase.

The developer states that The Meyer Choir is “a dedicated standalone plug-in that does not require Kontakt [and]works in all major DAWs.”

The release is compatible with Windows 7 or newer and Mac OS X 11 or newer (Intel and Apple Silicon supported).

The plugin is a 64-bit exclusive for both operating systems and requires a minimum of 8 GB RAM. The download size for the plugin is approximately 353 MB.

  1. Interesting – an earlier version of this came out on Pianobook a while back (I’ve got the Decent Sampler version). I’d be interested to see if this new version has newly recorded samples, as I’d be disappointed if it had the same samples and also fewer controls than the previous version.

  2. This will complement Sonatina Choir and LABS Choirs for me. Great sounding Choir plugin. 5/5. Sine player also has some decent sounding choir sounds. Sank You!

  3. Hi,

first of all, I totally agree with Recko, this guy made his family immortal and that’s huge ! Furthermore it seems to sound quite good so thanks a lot to him for the great (and fun) work he did 😉
I bought it (2 bucks only but hey… at least everyone of us should give a goin to thank that work if it is just a bit useful ;-) )

It seems that there are some issues installing the plugin on my mac (it says it can’t be installed on my HD)… it never happened before. Maybe any of you have the solution, that would be fair,

    all the best,
