MNTRA Instruments releases Borealis-LE, a FREE dynamic reverb plugin for macOS and Windows.
Borealis is a dynamic reverb plugin and the first FX plugin from MNTRA Instruments, a developer that previously focused on virtual instruments.
Borealis-LE is a free, stripped-back version of Borealis with an engaging, interactive GUI. I’m mentioning the GUI straightaway because it’s something that we’ve come to expect from MNTRA Instruments.

MNTRA Instruments likes to push creative boundaries in an organic way that embraces imperfection.
Although the developer isn’t trying to recreate real life, there is a strong connection to nature and the universe, evident in its distinct geometric interfaces. You can see examples in previous releases like Reson and Sur.
The geometric trend continues with Borealis-LE, a reverb that dynamically responds to your performance.
The Perform view is more than just a pretty picture; the animated image allows you to adjust the X, Y, and Z axes to manipulate multiple performance parameters simultaneously.
The arrow at the bottom left opens/closes the control panel, where you can view algorithm parameters and what they are assigned to. The control panel also allows you to adjust things like the effect’s input/output gains and the input gain of the envelope follower.

You’ll also see four tabs at the bottom of the interface; these tabs give access to additional algorithm parameters, the Mapping Window, Modulation, and the Mastering section.
By opening the Mapping Window, you can control what each parameter is mapped to (manual control, axis control, or modulator control).
You can then use the RTPC tables (Real-Time Parameter Controls) displayed to control the range and response of the mapping. The expand icon enlarges the table view and provides access to preset shapes.
The Modulation Page has three complex modulators and an envelope follower. The modulators go beyond the typical shapes, offering a custom table shape and stepped modulation.
The Mastering section offers a parametric EQ and mastering-grade limiter.
The paid version of this plugin has fourteen algorithms, while this free version only has one: Sanctuary.
Sanctuary delivers bright modulating reflections and is described as a workhorse algorithm that provides a taste of the full product.
Borealis-LE has eleven factory presets.
MNTRA Instruments always brings something interesting and never walks the beaten track.
Another reverb that doesn’t walk the beaten track is Witch Pig’s Black Mirror Reverb, the free reverb for those who want something darker.
Borealis-LE is available in 64-bit AU, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.11 upwards) and Windows (10 upwards).
