dBdone has released Wasser, a free multiband delay plugin for macOS and Windows.
Wasser splits the incoming signal into frequency bands and lets you draw a different delay time for each one. That’s a pretty cool idea.
It’s definitely a fun little tool for sound design because it lets you create rhythmic movement that would otherwise need to be done manually through multiple frequency splits.
The GUI comes with a drawable grid where every vertical bar represents one frequency band. The grid time base determines the value of each upward step.
For example, if you select 1/16 and draw a bar three steps high, that frequency band returns three sixteenth notes later. Drawing a rising ramp makes a single hit scatter across the spectrum like a cascade of droplets.
Bands left at the bottom of the grid pass through without delay. This means you can keep the low end and kick drum in place while pushing the snare, hi-hats, and upper percussion into a new rhythmic pattern.
I tested this on different types of material, and it works best on drums and other sources with clear gaps between the hits. The developer does not recommend it for pads and drones because sustained sounds leave less empty space, and I agree. It sounds much better on percussion, pulses, and similar sources.
Wetness fades between the dry signal and the delayed bands, while Enhance boosts the processed signal when only a small portion of the spectrum is delayed. There is also a more conventional full-band delay with its own time base, feedback, and ping-pong processing.
Wasser includes 20 factory presets, but the drawable grid is the main attraction for me. You can clear it, sketch a new delay pattern, and save an unlimited number of user presets.

Wasser v1.0 is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
