Cobra Fuzz is the latest plugin to join the Safari Pedals lineup, and for a limited time, you can purchase it for $55 (usually $89).
Safari Pedals is a developer that’s wild by name and a little wild by nature. The team at Safari Pedals wants to unleash your inner audio animal with effects that won’t go unnoticed.
It’s worth pointing out now that IK Multimedia’s TONEX 75 Guitar Suite is still available at a 75% discount from Audio Plugin Deals; it could be the perfect time to cash in on some sweet guitar deals! (It’s a limited-time offer, but it’s still available at the time of writing. Act fast.)
Staying true to the Safari Pedals way, Cobra Fuzz is straightforward, with just a handful of controls on a good-looking interface.
The interface is less colourful than many other Safari Pedals plugins, but the grungy, road-tested look works well. It looks like a go-to pedal you’ve had for years and won’t gig without it.
The controls along the top are Sustain, Gain, and Output Trim.
The Sustain knob controls the intensity of the fuzz effect by adjusting the duration of the saturation.
The Gain knob is a four-way stepped gain control offering various gain ranges. Having a stepped gain control rather than a continuous one is perhaps surprising, but Cobra Fuzz goes through the gears well from gentle fuzz to blissfully obnoxious saturation.
Maybe guitarists, who will be the primary users of this type of effect, might see more of an issue with the stepped gain than I do.
The Output Trim allows you to keep any peaks in check.
The mid-section of the pedal provides Pre-Boost and Oversampling switches. The Pre-Boost boosts your input by a hefty 20 dB.
The last three controls at the bottom are Tone, Blend, and Width.
The Tone can be very bright, or it can be very warm and well-rounded, so there’s a broad spectrum to play through. The Blend control is a simple dry/wet mix, and the Width knob allows you to create a wider sound without altering the mono signal.
At the risk of sounding vanilla, I really like Cobra Fuzz at the two lowest gain settings, with the sustain around a quarter to halfway up without any boost.
Although the controls are straightforward, the plugin comes to life by finding the right combinations. So, there’s a lot of nuance within a handful of controls, which is great; it keeps it simple while also being flexible.
If you fancy a bigger discount, you can get the Safari Pedals Everything Bundle for just $149 (usually $590).
You can also download a free trial of Cobra Fuzz, but don’t take long to decide; the intro discount will expire soon.
