Dreamtonics has released Instrument X, a new orchestral instrument platform that uses neural acoustic modeling instead of conventional sample playback.
The Tokyo-based developer is best known for Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro and the Vocoflex voice transformation plugin. Instrument X extends the idea of editable performances beyond vocals to orchestral strings, woodwinds, and brass.
Rather than loading a huge collection of static samples, Instrument X translates MIDI notation into modeled acoustic performances. Everything runs locally on your computer, without a dedicated GPU or an internet connection, and the approach also keeps the storage footprint low.
The main attraction is the amount of performance control available without building complicated keyswitch maps. Smart Articulation automatically selects suitable playing techniques, but you can override its choices and edit each note manually.
Standard articulations like staccato, legato, and tenuto are included alongside instrument-specific techniques such as pizzicato, col legno, sul ponticello, string harmonics, brass mutes, and trombone portamento.
Also, multiple articulations can be stacked on the same note for more unusual combinations.
The Dynamics Lane considers pitch, note duration, and musical context when generating a performance. Editing the curve changes more than volume, as it also morphs elements such as breath pressure, bow friction, timbre, and harmonic intensity.
AI Performance Retakes provide alternative variations for selected phrases. You can regenerate the complete performance or target details such as micro-pitch movement, timbre, and intensity while leaving the written notes unchanged.
Dreamtonics also measured its studio using a custom dodecahedral speaker array, allowing Instrument X to separate the source instrument from the room response. The resulting Microphone Mixer provides up to 11 phase-coherent feeds, including spot microphones, a Decca Tree, and ambient pairs.
The launch lineup is divided into three collections. Strings contain violin, viola, cello, and double bass; Woodwinds cover flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet in A, and bassoon; Brass provides trumpet, trombone, horn, and tuba.
Each instrument expansion costs $99. The Strings and Brass collections cost $249 each, while Woodwinds is $279. Several custom and complete bundles are also available, including the Complete Collection 2026 for $649.
The core Instrument X editor is included for free with any expansion purchase. A 14-day Instrument X evaluation and seven-day trials of the individual expansions are available through the Product Manager, with a limit of 150 notes per group.
Instrument X is available for macOS and Windows as a standalone application and in VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats.
