Tribe Instruments released Dimension Chorus, a freeware 64-bit plugin for macOS and Windows.
The developer tells us the plugin allows you to “sculpt immersive sonic landscapes with ease.” Now, that sounds really pretty, doesn’t it? But what can it actually do?
Well, the Dimension Chorus can expand the stereo image of a source or create a pseudo stereo effect from a mono source.
Tribe Instruments has included a high pass filter to help nip low-frequency phase issues in the bud.
You can also use the plugin to dial in just the right amount of wash to adjust the depth of the effect, expand the stereo image with the width control, and monitor the effect amount with the goniometer display.
The user interface certainly looks very cool and sci-fi, which befits the name and overall branding of the release.
However, looking at the interface is a bit confusing, as there are no permanent labels in place saying what does what, and the graphics alone are not enough to indicate that at first glance.
That said, when you hover over a control the interface specifies what the parameter does so it wouldn’t take too long to get used to the function of each control, especially with such a minimalist control scheme.
The developer has provided a SoundCloud playlist on the product page, which hosts wet and dry demos of four sources, namely a Rhodes electric piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and snare drum.
The effect shown in the demos is fairly subtle, but it definitely gives a little special sauce to the source, changing up the texture of the instrument and how it sits in the mix.
It would be a nice option to have in the tool kit, as you could use it to help spice up an element in your mix that sounds too “stock,” as the noted part-time record producer Lars Ulrich is known to say.
You can download the plugin from the product page by signing up for the Tribe Instruments mailing list.
When I signed up to the mailing list, Tribe Instruments instantly emailed me to confirm the email address.
Within five minutes of confirming my email, the company sent me the download link for the Dimension Chorus, which went directly to a Zip file that included both the macOS and Windows installers.
