Variety of Sound has released TesslaSE MKIII, a free analog-style signal enhancer for Windows.
Music-makers, audio engineers, and producers have lofty expectations for any Variety of Sound release, a level of expectation that few developers garner in the freeware world.
Lofty as they are, these expectations aren’t without merit; Variety of Sound has a stellar track record of releasing excellent plugins that are equally practical and creative.
Earlier this year, we got epicCLOUDS, a lovely ambient reverb plugin, BootEQ MKIV EQ/preamp plugin, and the FeenstaubTX transient shaper.
Now, it’s time for TesslaSE MKIII, an update to the MKII version released in 2021.

While the new plugin looks almost identical, at a glance, it comes with significant enhancements.
Let’s start with the visually noticeable changes.
The Color control has replaced the high-frequency control (AIR) from the previous version. The Color knob adjusts the amount of the transformer sound.
The Depth control from MKII is gone in favour of a Saturation/Limiting control. This Sat/Lim knob allows you to adjust curve shapes following your desired effect.
Other than that, the plugin looks exactly the same as the 2021 release, but Variety of Sound has packed in a few performance-enhancing upgrades.
The developer has added Anti-Derivative Anti-Aliasing (ADAA), which combines with internal oversampling to improve aliasing suppression.
The developer also improved the transformer model to perform better than ever. Much of the upgrade efforts focused on better interaction with the saturation stage and improved low-frequency handling.
Gainstaging has been changed to -12dBFS.
If you’re already a fan of the previous version and interested in experimenting with both, you’ll be glad to hear that TesslaSE MKIII has a new plugin ID and you can use it in parallel with MKII.
TesslaSE MKIII is available in Windows VST and VST3 formats.
If you’re new to Variety of Sound, check out the plugins I mentioned earlier and others on the website; they’re all worth a look.
If you’re a Mac user who can’t take advantage of this freebie, it sucks, but there will be plenty of freebies this month.
Like the Waves Black Friday plugin or PhaseMistress from Soundtoys (the offer ends on November 15, 2024).
