Earlier this month, Platone Studio released the Alton Limiter, a free release for macOS and Windows that is available in VST, VST3, and AU formats.
The dev states that the limiter is right at home for mixing and mastering tasks and allows producers to tame peaks and crank up mixes with clean volume, all within a user-friendly interface.
Alton Limiter is designed to cap peaks in a way that creates a smooth, balanced sound.
It can also be used to subtly squeeze the dynamic range, making tracks more cohesive while retaining their natural character.
Through the Threshold and Release parameters, you can finetune the response of the limiter to take it from fast and transparent to smooth and natural.
The plugin’s stereo limiting feature can enhance your stereo width by limiting both channels together, or you can process them separately for finer control.
Alton Limiter’s real-time visual feedback allows you to get a clear handle on how the input is affecting the signal.
It seems to me like it’s a pretty standard limiter that gets the job done fast and with a minimum of fuss.
The interface takes a simple approach, so you definitely won’t get any option paralysis here.
To my eyes, the visuals are probably a bit similar though, with every single part of the plugin being some variation of blue.
More contrast in the colour scheme could be used to make the parameter names and different parts of the interface pop out more on a busy DAW interface.
Platone Studio produced an official YouTube introduction for Alton Limiter, but it mostly just lists the features with only a few seconds of plugin operation shown.
Luckily for us bedroom producers, there’s already a number of user demos out on YouTube which really put Alton Limiter through its paces with a long-form audio demo showcasing it interacting with a track.
Platone Studio has provided a very nice and simple download process, as you can grab the Windows and macOS installers from the product page with a single click.
If you like what you’ve seen so far from the Alton Limiter, then you may wish to check out Platone Studio’s other plugins.
The developer offers several paid releases as well as free reverb, delay, and filter plugins.

oninstant download. all formats already extracted if you need them for portable use. installer included. ui – clean, easy to use, resizable with a click (prefer it this way). low cpu/gpu use. seems like it’s zero latency as well. tried it while tracking + monitoring – seems alright. reminds me of loudmax, but grittier and with release control. can be a bit obvious, so MAYBE not quite for the master channel (depends on how you mix). can become unapologetically mean, too. there is some aliasing, but unless pushed hard at 0.1 milliseconds release time – aliasing remains pretty much inaudible to my deaf ears. seems to support higher sample rates, so can be oversampled in reaper. all in all, for a free limiter – a very good deal imo. extra points for ease of download. things done right.
