Reflex Acoustics released the Reflex Limiter plugin this month, offering transparent limiting and light CPU operation.
The plugin is available for Windows (VST3) and macOS (VST3, AU), with AAX support “coming soon.”
Reflex Acoustics designed the Reflex Limiter to transparently control signal peaks while operating on a light enough CPU draw to be used in multiple instances simultaneously.
If you prefer a bull in a china shop approach over transparency, you can instead push the limiter hard for some crunchy distortion on tracks or buses.
The plugin has a fast-acting, look-ahead comp in series with a clipper.
The comp alone doesn’t necessarily catch all the peaks, but it cuts down the workload for the clipper and cleans up the sound.
The Reflex Limiter offers -6db to +18db pre-gain, and operates with 0-16ms latency, depending on your settings.
You can independently deactivate the compressor and clipper, although peaks may exceed the threshold if the latter is turned off.
The dev has included an Auto Ceiling button, which sets the output threshold relative to your signal peaks.
When Auto is engaged, then the Ceiling dial controls the decibels cut from peaks, regardless of the incoming level.
You can also slap on 2x oversampling with the O/S button. When oversampling is on, a backstop clipper is applied to catch any new peaks brought in due to the filter.
There’s an optional Matched-LUFS output, which allows for A/B testing or for setting up the plugin to operate as a LUFS-neutral effect.
All that sounds like a bit on paper, but after having a look at the interface, I can see it’s all laid out quite clearly in the order that the signal passes through, making it intuitive to work with.
To get your own copy and start crushing, just add the plugin to the cart on the Reflex Acoustics website.
After doing that I was presented with a form that required an email address and all the info that’s normally required for a physical purchase. Signing up to the mailing list was unchecked by default so that’s a nice touch.
After completing the checkout you can make your way to downloading the installer files straight from the website via two clicks, where the dev offers a 7.91 MB .exe file for Windows and a 14.7 MB .pkg file for macOS users.
