Over the weekend Wire Grind Audio dropped Rasp, a Windows-exclusive plugin that can add grit, noise and a raspy sound to tracks.
Now you might be thinking that sounds a whole lot like distortion, but the dev explains that while Rasp sounds similar to distortion, it is not a conventional distortion effect.
Wire Grind Audio’s suggested use cases for Rasp are adding hoarseness to vocals, grittiness to drums, and noise to any track.
It can also be used for creative automation, transition, and filtering effects, as well as creating gnarly fuzz tones and pad sounds.
The control scheme has a no-frills layout, with the main panel featuring Rasp Amount, Out Gain, and low and high-frequency knobs.
The controls are rounded out by In and Out levels, as well as Bypass and oversampling switches.
The low and high controls set the frequency range of the noise while oversampling can be used to suppress aliasing.
Wire Grind Audio has also included Undo and Redo arrows at the top of the interface, as well as an A and B parameter saving system, which allows you to switch between two parameter sets.
Wire Grind Audio has provided a very nice and simple download process. You can download the Windows installer in one click straight from the product page, which we at BPB love to see.
You can also grab the files for a manual installation of the product page as well.
Rasp is a 64-bit exclusive release available in VST3 format for Windows 7 to 11.
Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be any official or user demos available for Rasp online at this point.
It seems to me that Rasp is a quirky, no-frills indie drop that could be a good freebie to check out if you’re looking for a unique and versatile plugin with a simple control scheme.
Rasp is one of two freebies from Wire Grind Audio, with the other being Doffset.
Doffset can remove DC offset and fluctuating biases, helping you add more gain to a final mix.
That particular release has a pretty specific use case. Still, the dev also offers more general-use paid plugins, such as the Abracompabra comp and expander, Ungated gated and transient processor, Blizzverb room verb, and Fuzzoa smooth distortion.
