Witch Pig releases Geminate, a FREE doubler/mimic effect plugin

From developer Witch Pig comes Geminate, a free doubler/mimic effect plugin for macOS and Windows.

Over the last few years, we’ve come to expect a few things from Witch Pig plugins, like quirky names and interesting interfaces.

Prime examples include Bangkok Ping Pong Delay, Black Mirror Reverb, and Apocalypsis.

Another thing these plugins often share is that they encourage a heavier-handed approach. Whether it’s completely mangling a sound or adding dark reflections, they are character-altering effects that are meant to be heard.

Geminate is slightly different; while it can be more aggressive, some of the best results come from a subtler approach.

Geminate is a doubler/mimic-style effect that makes single-tracked instruments sound like they were double-tracked.

The stomp-box-style plugin has a Left/Right channel switch and three knobs: Dynamics, Pitch, and Timing.

The Dynamics knob creates loudness variations.

You can use Pitch for micropitch detuning (sliding to the left) or to raise the affected channel’s pitch (to the right).

The Timing knob introduces more delay variation as you push it further to the right.

With Pitch and Timing especially, you can generate pretty creative effects that sound great on the right source.

For example, anything that isn’t already busy rhythmically, like sparse electric piano chords, a simple guitar line, or even basic percussion, sounds great with more obvious delay variation.

But what I’m enjoying most so far is the more subtle approach when you want to make something sound bigger and wider.

For the most part, I’d do so without pushing the Timing control too far.

I like that you can use Pitch (slight detuning) to thicken the sound without it getting muddy or losing too much detail. With the right source, I even like drifting slightly into out-of-tune territory.

Witch Pig’s demo video has a few good examples of Geminate at work, but I particularly enjoyed the Sordino Violins demo.

String libraries, even great ones, often need a little help to sound more human or more contextually cinematic. In this case, the strings already had lots of tension, but Geminate enhanced that cinematic atmosphere, and it sounds lovely.

Geminate is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
