Atropa from developer SoundRave is a free virtual analogue synth for macOS and Windows.
We don’t all have the space or budget to own every analogue synth on our wishlists (making the list is easy; the space and money are always harder to work out).
Whether emulating a specific hardware synth or recreating the general character of analogue synthesis, virtual analogue synth VSTs give us access to a sound profile that might be otherwise unattainable.
We also have free options, like K-Whooms by Hansen Audio (Windows and Linux).
We can now throw SoundRave’s Atropa into the mix of free virtual analogue synths.
Atropa is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
Atropa is a multi-layer synth that keeps the workflow simple, even with complex patches.
The interface keeps you primarily on one page, with tabs for layers and per-layer elements, the modulation matrix, and effects.
You get two multi-wave oscillators and two multi-mode filters per layer. The filters can function in series or parallel.
Each layer also has an amp and filter envelope; then you have a global envelope and three LFOs.
Atropa includes a sixteen-slot modulation matrix plus an 8/16 step source with 12-tone quantisation, six Macro knobs, and an X/Y pad.
You can adjust parameters like pitch bend range and aftertouch depth in the MIDI tab, which has four assignable MIDI CC lanes.
For general features, we finish with a collection of built-in FX and an adjustable chain.
Typically, I go straight to pads and synth brass sounds with a virtual analogue synth, but surprisingly, some of the keys presets stood out to me here.
One of the things you’ll notice on the product page is a note about the use of AI in development. It’s just a short note to say where AI was used, and where it wasn’t.
Whatever your stance on AI is, I think it would be good for more developers to offer a little clarity on the subject without being asked.
