Sampleson’s rePEDAL is an experiment in machine learning; the project is currently in beta, and feedback is welcome.
In short, rePEDAL is an AI-powered overdrive pedal generator. You get an infinite amount of overdrive pedals in a single plugin.
The HD interface looks fantastic and incredibly user-friendly, with just a few controls.

In terms of making tonal adjustments, you have a Drive amount knob, a Gate function, and a Post Gain control.
However, the magic of rePEDAL is in the Remake button. The Remake button instantly generates a new/random overdrive pedal by randomizing the structure of the neural network.
In addition to the random nature of the overdrive design, rePEDAL will produce some unusual results. You’ll get some tones you won’t find elsewhere and probably wouldn’t go looking for.
If you head to the rePEDAL product page, Sampleson has added a nice oscilloscope view of a basic sine wave processed through the plugin. It clearly indicates just how varied or unexpected the results can be.
You can save any model rePEDAL generates for instant recall.
It’s an interesting use of machine learning in an audio plugin, focusing on unique sound design rather than replication.

I think I’m always going to have mixed feelings about the role of artificial intelligence in music or any creative art form. But, even as a skeptic, I think AI has a place as long as it isn’t making music from scratch with little to no human input.
There’s a pretty thin line between AI assisting the musician and the musician assisting AI, but rePEDAL is on the right side, and it’s a pretty cool concept.
Sampleson is the developer that provided one of my favorite free instruments of 2024 with its CollaB3 V2 tonewheel organ emulation. If you missed it last year, you should go back and check it out; it sounds lovely.
rePEDAL is available to download in 64-bit AU and VST3 formats for macOS (10.7 and higher) and Windows (7 and higher).
Sampleson suggests setting your DAW to 48 kHz for the most accurate model generation.
rePEDAL is currently in version 0.8.0, so the developer welcomes all feedback.
