Caelum Audio has released DynaBunny, a quirky but powerful dynamic bitcrusher plugin available for free until May 5th. The plugin drops just in time for Easter and helps mark the release of the developer’s new premium dynamics processor, DynaBit ($59.99).
After the free promo ends, DynaBunny will be priced at $12.99. But if you’re quick, you can grab it for nothing—and trust me, it’s worth it.
At first glance, I thought DynaBunny was another “joke” plugin from Caelum Audio (remember Dustbin?). The animated bunny GUI, cartoonish color scheme, and tongue-in-cheek product description (“It’s a bunny”) all scream April Fools.
But underneath the silliness is a seriously creative bitcrusher with a built-in dynamics processor, and I really like how the combo sounds in action.
DynaBunny combines sample rate and bit reduction with a range expander and an envelope follower. That might sound a little wild—and it is—but the result is a unique fusion of degraded audio and the original signal’s dynamics.
You’re not just digitally squashing your signal into digital oblivion, but also letting some of the dynamics come through.
If you’re into glitchy weirdness, you can pull the sample rate all the way down to 10Hz and reduce the bit depth to a single bit. Then crank the envelope to bring back the dynamics, and hear those decimated bits becoming alive and snappy again.
I tested DynaBunny on a drum loop and a few synth bass lines, and the transformation was wild. The plugin introduces brutal distortion, but the signal remains crisp and punchy. The Mix knob makes it easy to dial things back and blend in the dry signal, which helps avoid complete audio carnage (unless that’s what you’re after).
This isn’t Caelum Audio’s first freebie, by the way. Plugins like Flux Mini 2 and Tape Cassette 2 are already some of my sound design favorites. Even Dustbin, their trash-can-sample joke plugin, had some real potential for offbeat sound design.
DynaBunny is available in AU, VST3, AAX, and AUv3 formats for Windows, macOS, and iOS. You’ll need to register for a free Caelum Audio account to download it.
