Universal Audio has released the A-Type Multiband Dynamic Enhancer, a new UAD-exclusive plugin for Apollo interfaces and UAD hardware that brings vintage vocal processing magic into modern mixes.
If you’ve ever wondered how classic rock vocals from artists like Queen, Fleetwood Mac, and Journey managed to leap out of the mix with clarity and presence, there’s a good chance an A-Type processor played a role.
Originally designed to reduce tape hiss, Dolby’s multiband “compansion” processor became a secret sauce for vocal engineers, and now Universal Audio has fully modeled it as a plugin.
A-Type Multiband Dynamic Enhancer isn’t just a basic emulation—UAD claims it’s the first and only end-to-end recreation of the vintage unit. The A-Type plugin features the original’s Air, Excite, and Expand processing modes, which were often used to add brightness, clarity, and stereo width to vocals.
It’s designed specifically for real-time tracking and mixing with no latency on Apollo hardware.
UAD also added several modern enhancements that weren’t available in the original hardware. The plugin includes Crush and Gated modes, which add gritty compression and classic ’80s-style gated effects that work well on drums and instruments.
You also get a Circuit Mods panel, which goes far beyond the original hardware with extra tone-shaping tools like transient shaping, subharmonic enhancement, and more.

I haven’t tried the A-Type Multiband Dynamic Enhancer yet, but if it delivers the kind of presence and edge that older A-Type boxes were known for, this could be a killer option for mixing in the box.
It’s particularly appealing if you’re after a vocal sound that cuts through dense arrangements or you want to add vintage character to modern recordings.
The A-Type Multiband Dynamic Enhancer is priced at $199 and is available exclusively for macOS and Windows systems running Apollo audio interfaces or other UAD hardware. As always, UAD plugins require an active hardware connection to function, so this isn’t one for native plugin users.
