AnaMatrix Lite from Analogy Instruments gets its vintage sound via sampled waveforms from classic hardware synthesisers.
The Lite version comes with sixteen presets, and if you like what you hear, you can purchase the full version of AnaMatrix for $39 (it seems like the price of the full version has changed a few times, so keep an eye on it for deals).
AnaMatrix Lite is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
The presets range from percussive plucks to shimmering and textural pads to soaring leads. With some creatively named presets to choose from (Bride of Frankenstein, for example), my favourites are somewhat boring by comparison (in name only): Cinematic Low and Ethereality.
Cinematic Low has a really hefty low-end that’s ideal for anchoring harmony, pedal notes, and slower ostinatos. The further up the keyboard you go, the more of a shimmering/singing quality you get, making it an excellent sound for tackling harmonic and melodic content.
Ethereality, as you might expect, is an ethereal pad sound, which isn’t unusual. But it’s very well done, and the slight undulating character makes any nice chord (or even octaves) interesting without the need to add much else.
Presets aside, AnaMatrix Lite has a small selection of controls wrapped in a nice interface.
On the left side, you’ve got LFO parameters (Rate/Depth), wave type selector (Triangle, Sine, Saw, Square, Exponent), Glide, and Velocity settings. You also have three selectable performance modes: Mono, Poly, and Legato, to suit your chosen sound.
On the right, you have a low-pass filter, ADSR envelope, and Gain sliders.
AnaMatrix Lite also features a few built-in effects, including Distortion, Chorus, Delay, and Reverb.
AnaMatrix Lite isn’t some infinitely deep sound design synth that will keep you locked away in your bedroom for days. If you want something deeper (without getting too crazy), check out the free Massive X Player by Native Instruments.
What you get from AnaMatrix Lite is the immediacy of nice vintage sounds that are ready to go or slightly tweaked with a few simple controls. Sometimes, that’s all we need!
