Mic Room is a mic modeling plugin designed to reshape the tonal character of recorded audio by simulating over 20 classic and modern microphones. It’s part of the T-RackS suite, but it works just fine as a plugin in any modern DAW.
I picked this up on sale earlier and have to say, it’s a handy tool for getting a great vocal sound at home. I’ve recorded vocals on a real U87 before at a friend’s studio, and I’ve been surprised by how convincing Mic Room’s U87 model sounds when paired with a cheaper mic.
Mic Room doesn’t just try to match the frequency response of high-end mics. It also adds subtle harmonic complexity and saturation that helps vocals sit in the mix. Of course, it’s not a 1:1 copy of the original it tries to emulate, but it gets you in the ballpark.
But, most importantly, it’s not just a one-trick pony for vocals. I’ve been using Mic Room as a tone-shaping tool on sampled instruments and virtual synths.
Sometimes I just scroll through mic model combinations until I hit something that fits and adds interest to an otherwise dull sound. You can go for extra fatness, thin out the lows, or add a bit of grit without reaching for an EQ or saturation plugin.
You don’t even need to match the modeled mic to your real mic. Just experiment and go by ear. It has intuitive controls for proximity effect and harmonic content, so you can dial in a more “FM radio” vocal or push things into lo-fi territory.
Mic Room is perfect if your mic locker is mostly budget gear, or if you just want a fast way to inject character into dry recordings. It sounds pretty good, and at this price, it’s absolutely worth grabbing.
Mic Room is available in VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for Windows and macOS (64-bit). You’ll need an ASIO-compatible sound card on Windows and macOS 10.15 or newer.
T-RackS isn’t required for it to run. Just drop it into your DAW and go.
