Sonimus has released DelaySon, a free analog-style delay plugin for macOS and Windows.
If you’ve been producing music for a while, the name Sonimus might bring back memories. I first discovered them fifteen years ago when they released SonEQ, a rare kind of freebie back then.
With its sleek (especially for 2010) GUI, analog-style saturation, and musical EQ curves, it was one of the few freeware plugins that genuinely rivaled paid plugins in terms of features and polish.
Since then, Sonimus has continued to deliver high-quality software like console emulations and other effect plugins, many of which include their signature saturation.
So, seeing the new DelaySon freebie from Sonimus feels like a nostalgic return to the old days of BPB for me, and the fact that it’s an excellent plugin is a cherry on top.
DelaySon is a tape-style delay with a bit character and handy tone-shaping features. While it doesn’t introduce any groundbreaking new delay concepts, it nails the essentials with analog warmth and a clean user interface.
I’m personally a big fan of modulated delays with character, and DelaySon delivers exactly that. The modulation and tone controls are where the magic happens, turning a bland and basic delay into something a lot more musical.
The interface uses a deep black color scheme that’s easy on the eyes, with well-organized sections for Color, Time, and Delay. You can switch between tempo sync and manual delay time, adjust modulation depth (for that wow-and-flutter tape vibe), and tweak the tone for brighter or darker echoes.
The Color section also includes a low-cut filter, which is perfect for cleaning up muddy repeats. I also like automating the filter to add a bit of movement to the delayed signal.
In the Delay section, you’ll find controls for feedback (which goes up to self-oscillation territory), stereo offset, and a Drive control to push the analog-style saturation harder. There’s also a wet/dry mix, output gain, and a preset system to save your favorite configurations.
DelaySon excels in traditional roles like slapback delay and rhythmic echo, but you can also push it into more experimental territory with high modulation and near-infinite feedback. It works for anything from adding subtle movement to vocals to going full-on psychedelic with synths and guitars.
DelaySon is compatible with macOS (10.10 and newer) and Windows (10 and newer) and runs in VST2.4, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats. It also supports Apple Silicon natively. You can download it for free from the Sonimus website by entering your email address.
