My Happy Tape is a free vintage tape machine plugin for macOS and Windows, created by Yuri Semyonov.
Yuri Semyonov is an indie developer with a stellar reputation among audio enthusiasts for recreating the core character of classic vintage hardware.
The “My Happy” project also includes My Happy Bus Compressor and My Happy Channel Strip.
If you aren’t familiar with those plugins yet, you might be more familiar with the EQ Classic OLD 2M and OLD 2M Classic OLD 2M Compressor, which Yuri released under the PsuedoStereo banner.
My Happy Tape is available in AU, VST2, and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
Unfortunately, My Happy Tape is proving to be something of a conundrum for me. From user feedback, I know some macOS users have the plugin working, albeit with a few bugs. But I’m having no luck with either the AU or VST3 versions on macOS 14.5 and Logic Pro 11.0.1.
As always, sharing your experience in the comments, for any system, is welcome, and I’d especially like to hear from macOS users who have My Happy Tape working in Logic Pro.
As I mentioned, not all macOS users experience the same problems, and since the developer works on Windows, there are fewer issues there (although Yuri suggests trying the VST2 version if some DAWs on Windows have a problem with the VST3).
Like Yuri Semyonov’s other emulations, My Happy Tape isn’t an exact copy of a hardware unit; it’s more about capturing the core character with a few twists.
My Happy Tape adds instant color and warmth in an obvious way, but not over the top. It’s not just a warm, punchy sound; it’s instantly recognizable as what you imagine, or stereotype, an old vintage tape machine to sound like, and that’s lovely.
You might notice similarities between its interface and that of Universal Audio’s Oxide, such as the 7.5 to 15 IPS switch (inches per second).
Oxide took the core character of the Studer A800, but made it more prominent, and that’s what My Happy Tape does.
Switching between 7.5 and 15 IPS should allow you to create a more subtle effect, too, but, like Oxide, this plugin doesn’t offer the 30 IPS of the A800 hardware and focuses more on the mid to low-fidelity tape magic.
Another nice touch is the ability to switch Entropy channels, allowing some control over the amount of random inconsistencies.
Despite not being able to try it out yet, I like the sound of My Happy Tape. There’s something really pleasing about tape, and this plugin sounds like the perfect amount of unapologetic tape magic.
