Techivation has released M-Imager, a spectral stereo widening plugin for macOS and Windows.
M-Imager is Techivation’s take on clean, natural-sounding imaging and stereo expansion. After my initial test, I have to say it’s a seriously impressive tool if you’re into subtle but precise mix enhancement.
It’s designed to widen mono or stereo tracks without introducing phase issues, transient smearing, or any of that artificial-sounding “chorus shimmer” some wideners produce.
At the core of M-Imager is a custom, phase-only spectral decorrelator that generates stereo width from a mono source using phase rotation. That sounds complex, but what it means in practice is that it applies artifact-free stereo widening even when used aggressively.
I found it particularly useful on background vocals and guitar leads, where it lets you dial in the stereo width without muddying the low end or messing with mono compatibility. The plugin keeps the side channel continuously aligned, so your stereo field doesn’t drift or tilt left/right over time.
There are two main sections in the plugin: the stereo widening module and the side channel dynamic EQ.
The Widen control lets you set how much stereo information is generated from the mid channel. You can then target the effect using the Widen Range, which is great for widening only the upper frequencies while keeping your bass tight and centered.
The second section, the dynamic side EQ, is where M-Imager gets really clever (and Techivation really likes adding these smart solutions to their plugins).
You can dynamically boost or cut high frequencies on the side signal based on the level of the mid channel. That means you can, for example, add sparkle to louder parts of a track while keeping things more contained during quiet passages.
There’s also a Mono Cutoff to roll off the stereo effect below a specific frequency, plus mid/side gain controls and solo monitoring for both channels.
The interface is clean and modern, as I’m used to seeing from Techivation, with a real-time stereo goniometer and handy features like undo/redo, AB switching, tooltips, and scalable GUI.
M-Imager is available now for an introductory price of $55 (regular price $129 after September 20, 2025). Loyalty discounts and bundle upgrade pricing are also available. A fully functional 14-day free trial is offered.
The plugin runs on Windows 7 and up and macOS 10.15 or later, with native Apple Silicon support. Formats include VST, VST3, AU, and AAX.
