Mario Nieto just released a bunch of legacy Max for Live devices for free! While the devices are free, you still need Ableton and Max for Live, which are both paid software.
This suite is comprised of legacy devices, so there are no updates or support, and there might be some bugs here and there. In other words: What you see is what you get!
The Legacy Pack contains the following devices:
- Random Riff Generator Pro 2
- Random Chords Generator Pro
- Random Groove Generator Pro
- Random Filter Generator 2
- Midifidget 1.1
- Midifidget (Hater Edition)
- PokeSample Ball
Random Riff Generator Pro 2 generates MIDI sequences that can be sent to any synth or software. Get new melodies or other musical ideas on the fly, and tweak them further by exploring all the different parameters.
It has an inbuilt piano roll, quantisation, harmoniser, pitch function, and more.
Random Chords Generator Pro generates chords from MIDI input. It has 52 chord types and manual or automatic controls for parameters like inversion, arpeggiator, and velocity.
While you can add a final scale with adjustable modalities to ensure that the generated chords always play in key with the rest of your track, this is just scratching the surface – You have to try it for yourself!
Random Groove Generator Pro
A complex tool that generates rhythms on four separate channels. Load samples into the four channels, select your number of steps, quantisation, and shuffle amount, and start creating beats.
To make the whole thing better, you can dial in pitch, sample point, filter settings, number of notes and more. You could, of course, spam the randomiser buttons as well, to see what the device generates on its own. It is guaranteed fun!
Random Filter Generator 2
This tool generates filter sequences that bring life into static sounds.
Select any number of steps between 2 and 64 and dial in appropriate quantisation to alter the action.
It has a dry/wet control, adjustable filter range and slope, a randomiser, and more.
Midifidget 1.1 and the hater edition generate MIDI notes that can be sent to any synthesiser. The notes are arpeggiated and controlled by the virtual fidget spinner. This means that the speed is dynamic, which is very cool!
Click the infinity button to “freeze” the current speed of the fidget spinner for a more traditional arpeggiator.
You can increase or decrease inertia and duration velocity to control the action more precisely.
Select which notes are being sent, or feel free to let the device choose for you by clicking randomise.
You can quantify on a scale as well. If you need tonal percussive elements, this is great. Why not load several instances to create complex polyrhythms that stay in key?
PokeSample Ball is a sampler and sequencer. “Catch” a sample by dragging a clip from your project into the PokeBall interface. The 16-step sequencer lets you modify attack, decay, and pitch values for every step. It also has a randomiser function that comes up with new patterns.
It could be a drum machine, a melody maker, or perfect for a layer of glitchy textures. It’s all about what samples you catch.
If you have Ableton with Max for Live, this is definitely something to check out. Seems like the perfect toolkit to get you out of a creative rut.
