Drox II is a FREE Max for Live glitch effect by Dystopian Waves

October 23, 2025By Magnus Vanebo1 Comment
Get Drox II, a glitch and stutter effect (now available as VST) by Dystopian Waves, for FREE!

Developer Dystopian Waves has a bunch of interesting Max for Live devices on their Gumroad page. Now you can get Drox II, a glitch and stuttering effect, for free.

Please note that this requires Max for Live and Ableton Live (both paid).

Drox II is a real-time audio manipulation device that can infuse movement, complexity, chaos, and character to your tracks. You could use it to make nostalgic effects like CD skipping, which we all used to love back in the day.

YouTube video

If the thoughts of CD skipping already make your blood boil, you could, of course, opt for more subtle effects like tape dropouts, variable playback speed, and pitch flutters.

You could also take the device to the opposite territory by utilising the device’s randomisation functions to generate ever-evolving repetitions, stutter, and filtering effects.

Feed it tonal information, noise, or field recordings, and use it to create anything from groovy rhythms, IDM-like glitch, or more noise-based layers to fill in your production.

Drox II appears to be an enjoyable and intuitive tool that lends itself well to recording improvised tweaks and creating entirely new sounds.

The UI is neat with a clear layout. To the left, we have the section for dropouts, which can be enabled by the on/off button.

Density controls the frequency, Size controls duration, while Depth controls the overall volume change of the dropouts.

You can also switch between Hz and tempo-synced modes.

The next section controls jumping. Density determines how often the read head jumps, Size controls how long playback continues from the new position before returning to the main playback head, and Range controls how far the tape head can jump.

Like the previous section, tape jumping can also be synced to your host’s BPM.

After dropouts and jumps, we get to the larger stutter section. The upper panel has a window control that influences the envelope of each repeat as well as density, size, and repetition parameters, as well as a master control for the randomisation functions.

The bottom panel features pitch parameter, a pitch spread parameter, a reverse function, a distortion module, and a state-variable filter that can behave in different ways depending on the randomisation settings.

Next up, and all the way to the right, we get a dry/wet knob, a playback direction (reverse) control, and a gain knob.

Drox II is a sonic playground that can make a lot of unexpected sounds for that extra spice in your track. When I see freebies like this, I feel a little salty because they’re Ableton Live exclusive. Such is life!

Need even more Max for Live devices? Check out this big legacy plugin suite by developer Mario Nieto that we covered here at BPB recently!
