Developer Urban Kits has released Bedroom Guitar, a free sampled nylon-string guitar plugin for macOS and Windows.
Bedroom Guitar seems like the perfect name for this library, and not only because we’re all about bedroom producers around here.
It’s the perfect name because, as any non-guitarist will know, finding a convincing virtual guitar sound is no easy task for a bedroom producer. We can’t always draft in a guitarist, and samples are no good if we need to record a specific/unique part or line.
I should say that guitar VSTs have come a long way; UJAM has turned the Virtual Guitar series into something much more flexible, and there are also some interesting free options, like Bridge Guitar by The Crow Hill Company.
Bedroom Guitar delivers the sound of a softly played nylon-string guitar, ideal for lo-fi, ambient music, pop, and more.
I know acoustic guitar libraries can sound a bit toy-like once triggered by a MIDI keyboard, but it’s all about context, and there are a few things Bedroom Guitar does well, especially within the genres mentioned above.
Articulation is where many libraries fall, and while Bedroom Guitar doesn’t get specific about articulation, it works well when simulating hammer-ons and pull-offs as best you can with the keyboard, and not all libraries do.
It also sounds good with a slight bend, and being able to accent notes in a few ways makes for a more convincing performance.
Simple but catchy ostinato parts for lo-fi tracks or even pop in an early Justin Timberlake style work best for me.
You can get more intricate with it, but, as always, context becomes even more linked to authenticity.
Bedroom Guitar has a bunch of features that can help the sound sit appropriately in your track, including Pitch/Pan/Glide controls, an LFO, filter, Chorus, Reverb, and EQ.
Bedroom Guitar is available in AU, VST, and VST3 formats for macOS (0.9 and higher) and Windows (10 and higher)
